As 'Lucian Freud: Drawing into Painting' opens at the National Portrait Gallery (12 Feb – 4 May 2026), we’re reminded that drawing is often the backbone of great figurative art.

Freud’s uncompromising studies are at the centre of his practice — revealing drawing not as a preparatory exercise, but as the foundation of his intense, psychological approach to the human figure.

This commitment to figurative investigation connects Freud to many of our artists here at Magenta, from the striking figurative work of Christian Hook, to Doug Hyde’s sketch-led process, and Fabian Perez, Sherree Valentine Daines and Mark Spain.

Drawing remains one of the most powerful tools in figurative art.
